Jenseits der Grenze. Migration und Zeichen der Mehrsprachigkeit in europäischen Grenzlandschaften

Das fortlaufende Projekt Beyond the border. Signs of passages across the European borders des Fotografen Luca Prestia und des Soziolinguisten Federico Faloppa befasst sich mit verschiedenen europäischen Grenzen, oder „Grenzlandschaften“, mit der Absicht, diese Landstriche zu beobachten und Spuren von Anwesenheit, Durchreise, Interaktion zu sammeln und aufzuzeichnen: Akte der Resilienz, des Widerstands und der Existenz. Es betrachtet diese Grenzlandschaften, ohne zu werten und ohne die gewohnten Kategorisierungen zu bedienen, die wir aus der üblichen Darstellung der so genannten „Flüchtlingsproblematik“ in den Medien gewohnt sind.

Bei den vier Grenzlandschaften, die hier gezeigt werden, handelt es sich um Ventimiglia, die letzte italienische Stadt vor der französischen Grenze und der Côte d‘Azur; die Regionen Piemont und Hautes-Alpes, ebenfalls an der italienisch-französischen Grenze; Lesbos, die griechische Insel, auf der Tausende von Menschen auf der Flucht gelandet und gestrandet sind; und schließlich Bihać, eine bosnische Stadt auf der Balkanroute nahe der Grenze zu Kroatien.

Die Ausstellung suggeriert eine alternative Perspektive, die Grenzlandschaften als einen Schmelztiegel der Menschheit zu betrachten, diese Bilder und auch uns selbst als Betrachter in Frage zu stellen; und Sprachen und Mehrsprachigkeit als einen möglichen Weg zu sehen, kulturelle, wenn nicht sogar geopolitische Grenzen zu öffnen.

Beyond the border. Migration and multilingual signs at European borderscapes

The ongoing project Beyond the border. Signs of passages across the European borders by photographer Luca Prestia and sociolinguist Federico Faloppa looks at different European borders, or “borderscapes”, with the intention to observe those strips of land and collect and record traces of presences, passages, interactions: acts of resilience, resistance, and existence. It looks at these borderscapes without judging and without resorting to the usual categorisations that we are used to from the media’s common representation of the so-called “refugee problem”.

The four borderscapes presented here are Ventimiglia, the last Italian town before the French border and the Côte d’Azur; the regions of Piedmont and Hautes-Alpes, also at the Italian-French border; Lesvos, the Greek island that has become a landing and stranding place for thousands of people on the move; and finally Bihać, a Bosnian town along the Balkan route close to the border with Croatia.

The exhibition suggests an alternative way to look at the borderscapes as a crucible of humanity, to question those pictures, and question ourselves as viewers; and to see languages and multilingualism as a possible way to unseal cultural, if not geopolitical, borders.
